The house bought 50 years ago in Melbourne Australia for Jan was later handed on to her daughters, both now in their twenties and the decision was made to hand it on to their young cousin two year old Eve. This time a new family was added to live in the house, and it was the Sylvania Persian Cat family.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL8wjvezh_dhsvHUjj0PGaFamErEaYb11bqisLWq5-Cgay56xP8zTOKemU6oxsUb2kP7iv6iXZeFuCmnGTdL9ZwB_cB1ijy2cHjGRc3YKPVQPhQ8ZeMCJ8fCx00EFaDlk4YcMgv3t-tdo/s1315/IMG_1720.PNG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="758" data-original-width="1315" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL8wjvezh_dhsvHUjj0PGaFamErEaYb11bqisLWq5-Cgay56xP8zTOKemU6oxsUb2kP7iv6iXZeFuCmnGTdL9ZwB_cB1ijy2cHjGRc3YKPVQPhQ8ZeMCJ8fCx00EFaDlk4YcMgv3t-tdo/w400-h230/IMG_1720.PNG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I kept finding on Pinterest lots of ideas for clothes for Sylvania families and having decided to it would be fun to make some- for sometime in the future when Eve is a little older, came the need to own a family myself to use to model the creations I plan to make. So on Friday a Cottontail rabbit family came to live with me.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgukmW2hu1wtp9UemPebDmvyEQrKFpDUuBQ9MERCZFg14PCTpUwY0ME8T6Mkm4dESb-n-c9QF9qKxywXteRIGl6O7hxD_wC3kqJ0C05ZdI1sx2-ti-97gzRBWBjQghA9tTDtojnce8vrss/s710/sylvanian-families-cottontail-rabbit-family-3_1527130453.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="710" data-original-width="710" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgukmW2hu1wtp9UemPebDmvyEQrKFpDUuBQ9MERCZFg14PCTpUwY0ME8T6Mkm4dESb-n-c9QF9qKxywXteRIGl6O7hxD_wC3kqJ0C05ZdI1sx2-ti-97gzRBWBjQghA9tTDtojnce8vrss/s320/sylvanian-families-cottontail-rabbit-family-3_1527130453.jpg" /></a></div>Mrs Rebecca Cottontail is to be my fashion adviser and we will work together first on a collection of clothes suitable for a small girl to be easily able to dress her doll's house cats and later a collection for the Cottontail family. As I have made and embroidered so much for them over the years it was hard to decide what to make. I settled on pin cushions not sure how practical these will be but they were fun to make and I think they will both enjoy them. They are made from the same pattern and were cut out the same size but somehow the mice have turned out much fatter.<br />

CHRISTMAS STOCKING I have just finished the front of the Christmas stocking I am making for Finn, wanted to share what I had done with a friend but computers are funny things with minds of their own and the photo won't open for her, so I am posting it here. When I was in Wellington last I talked with Jackie over possible designs and we agreed on penguins and found some possible ideas which I gave adapted. Really enjoy creating this.<br />

Well worth the small amount it cost, great instructions and patterns. The pool is called " peep a moo " each preceding page has a hole on it to show a little of the animal on the next page. a few wrinkles, and for the most part the sewing machine did stitch correctly for me.... this sewing machine and I have never got on! <br />
Caitlin and I have now sorted out fabric for another book..... yes there will be more and have bought another LindyJ design... Home for Max. Max is a cute little dog that I look forward to showing you next year... finishing my Christmas sewing must come first.<br />

I had not heard it till Jackie sent me a short video of her singing it to Finn,<br />
I loved his reaction to her singing it. I have now made five little monkey finger puppets<br />

<br />
These are the fun birds I have made for a mobile for Finn, I thought of making a mobile as it is something Rachel could help me make, Caitlin had helped with the Dr Seuss quilt. I wanted something for each of the girls to help me make for their new cousin. Rachel is also good at woodwork and she has been home from uni for a week so I asked here to make a hanger for the mobile and all the pieces are now here but I won't put it together till I get down to Wellington to visit with Finn and his parents, Barryn and Jackie.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We planned the mobile when I was in Wellington a couple of months ago, it was to b e colourful and not to look like stuffed toys, we found birds similar to these on pinterest and they were fun pieces to stitch.<br />

Decide Jan's tree needed a couple more decorations, had planned to do two little witches next year, but after seeing the tree with the Halloween decorations up it defiantly needed more. Two little witches on the broom sticks were quickly made and delivered.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> Here is Jan's Halloween tree , the decorations are looking just as I planned, and I also planned to add two more next year, however when I saw the photo I decided the last two must come now as it would make the whole thing look so much better, so yes, I have started and am now making two witches on their broom sticks to hang from the bottom two branches.</span></div>

Caitlin spent two days with me this week, and although it was part of the school holidays she still had assignments to keep up with for school so we agreed we would have one day relaxing and the second while I was working down at church office she would work on her school work.<br />
Earlier jan had suggested she would like some Halloween decorations for her dowel tree, and there was not really the time available to stitch some of the lovely ones I had seen, so this is what I came up with, pumpkin shapes covered with bright orange fabric and then felt used for the motifs. I did four the owl, bat ( he comes from the book lovable mini dolls, and we made him too many many years ago) the crow and the cat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDJTyMQ5Q-UENYJX5MiCIQrbcglkHmM1-irzGF0F0I9JSxjPomy20lS7qRh33P5mQPvjg4wG95-XAT33oCtpHaFO_B6M4VQD-AmqOhTgivqldTnKbSOwKcgZ3xDS5OL_2mQZyRqVnfVDQ/s1600/DSCF2520.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDJTyMQ5Q-UENYJX5MiCIQrbcglkHmM1-irzGF0F0I9JSxjPomy20lS7qRh33P5mQPvjg4wG95-XAT33oCtpHaFO_B6M4VQD-AmqOhTgivqldTnKbSOwKcgZ3xDS5OL_2mQZyRqVnfVDQ/s400/DSCF2520.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Caitlin did two pumpkins with faces and also helped sew up some of my pumpkins. Today I took the photos and on Saturday will take them round for jan to hang on her tree and hopefully get some photos.<br />
This gives her three sets now for her tree.Christmas Easter and Halloween and I will try and add another theme for her next year. Over the winter she had some stars from another project she had made up and she needs more of these as there were not enough for all branches ... so that's another project for the future.<br />

Her tree has eight branches, perfect for her plan that Jan, Rachel, Caitlin and myself would each make 2 Eggs.<br />
Yesterday Caitlin and I went to Guild work day at that stage Caitlin had one Egg made and I had two started, we decided to work as a team and this is the result at the end of the day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Two from Caitlin the one on the left is the one she has made previously and the other one was a copy of one of my set that she planned to do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Two from me, I had them started and together we finished them, the photo does not do justice to the blue and silver one. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Jan bought these motifs but had not gotten round to starting so this is what </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Caitlin and I did with them, using the embroidered motifs was a great idea.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Tomorrow we will take them to Jan and we will probably trim the ribbons a little when we hang them .This has been a really fun project but it is time to move on. A Halloween tree has been talked about later in the year, which gives us plenty of time to decide on what to do.</div>

<div style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTIL7gKkI6DRP4wlEz7Ldrr_8NI_4HjdfUVpDp8lJGzlvVlYFABa4s-bwEaEq4Qaxn3dJ8X7nTibETKiiK9IMs4CnfQ0fvAqRVIUv6JAMfN6x7Bz3FGMBn4Su_3yeT4jiyOJ_jMY6BwkU/s1600/DSCF2388.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTIL7gKkI6DRP4wlEz7Ldrr_8NI_4HjdfUVpDp8lJGzlvVlYFABa4s-bwEaEq4Qaxn3dJ8X7nTibETKiiK9IMs4CnfQ0fvAqRVIUv6JAMfN6x7Bz3FGMBn4Su_3yeT4jiyOJ_jMY6BwkU/s1600/DSCF2388.JPG" height="320" width="189" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Jan's doweling Christmas tree still stands on the book case behind her desk she can't bear to pack it away, now she has come up with a new idea which will include all four of us, Jan, daughters Rachel and Caitlin and myself. We are each to make two Easter Egg decorations by March and she will then make it an Easter Tree. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCNCyAq20IIMwBeT2G7H1zryDfwZuULS3gzb5qcahEQDvcqkd5HGCZVyim0pTVypTM507K3XYHUOQmlpi0gh5nHRrqc8u3JmJtt3k0goevyXHqyEMLBZ8oDs6JLGvGmdrkjgdZ-nC2x4U/s1600/DSCF2419.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCNCyAq20IIMwBeT2G7H1zryDfwZuULS3gzb5qcahEQDvcqkd5HGCZVyim0pTVypTM507K3XYHUOQmlpi0gh5nHRrqc8u3JmJtt3k0goevyXHqyEMLBZ8oDs6JLGvGmdrkjgdZ-nC2x4U/s1600/DSCF2419.JPG" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I had the job of providing a template so we will all be making them the same size, and once I pulled out so materials the ideas flowed very fast and beside making the two for Jan, have decided to make a collection of eggs for my own tree, these need to be smaller. shown here are the two sizes the large one is about 3 1/2 inches. Here is some of the before and after efforts with the fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF2H_NAe3xV8E52ocQxbBeNG8ddfAUTLFaHYyZ-kZ1EIZl0fLbn32s67zl_HOHsa_IoGcWWfEVcHhOV9rmhRm-BDcOVdEqXqNZGVoAmn9voxdI8kE-kEvxLaYLS_QVNHUyFrcT3BwjLYQ/s1600/2015-01+(Jan).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF2H_NAe3xV8E52ocQxbBeNG8ddfAUTLFaHYyZ-kZ1EIZl0fLbn32s67zl_HOHsa_IoGcWWfEVcHhOV9rmhRm-BDcOVdEqXqNZGVoAmn9voxdI8kE-kEvxLaYLS_QVNHUyFrcT3BwjLYQ/s1600/2015-01+(Jan).jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
From these ideas Caitlin has decided she will make the ones on the left and the right so I can look forward to her spending some time here stitching They are really quite quick to make. as you can see already I have several, not all finished but well on the way now I need a shopping trip to find some more goodies of braid, beads and trims for finishing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMSnACZ5yNUeA0elggt4ZrtAWq7j66ea5UPRMrNXSZK6k9T7Q6h5zRVAQOovXG6IjzYKyPm4bd4i8V9NEjhjHokUCHtM9SIrNSdPx84V8vvJrLji5eVEeocZx8Udq41TEnt_HBAlr8bN8/s1600/2015-01+(Jan)1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMSnACZ5yNUeA0elggt4ZrtAWq7j66ea5UPRMrNXSZK6k9T7Q6h5zRVAQOovXG6IjzYKyPm4bd4i8V9NEjhjHokUCHtM9SIrNSdPx84V8vvJrLji5eVEeocZx8Udq41TEnt_HBAlr8bN8/s1600/2015-01+(Jan)1.jpg" height="425" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At this stage my favourite one is the blue forget-me-not one in the centre, I bought this material as it reminds me of the Chatham Island Forget-me-not which my mother grew and I have not succeeded getting established in my garden.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.nmessences.com/healing_images/chatham_island_forgetmenot_hot_building_3607.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="http://www.nmessences.com/healing_images/chatham_island_forgetmenot_hot_building_3607.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Will keep you posted with what I stitch , maybe some cross stitch ones next.</div>

This last one is the one I stitched as a Christmas gift for Rachel however I wanted it to be something she could hang in her flat all year round and not just at Christmas time. I am pleased with how it turned out.<br />

I just had to share some results of the Guild workday doing my Christmas decorations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first to finish on the day was Caitlin, it was a thrill to work with her and to see how she followed directions . in finishing she did use a tassel that I had prepared for one of my decoration and after the work session we came back to my place to get some braid to glue round the edges and then went home proudly with her finished piece and yes, her Grandmother was very proud of her. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is her decoration.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: x-large;">In answer to requests I am sharing how I make these Christmas decorations.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXQ2k6D5vUChMckxuAvwTDSTZ42PQ4qWb6DnYoNRa6ecJvHypGWgqutg5wM_px2TVe54m3zhMxpUQ_MoqqkqtjfcXc4Wf6rlSWbRZdjiJ7RZNo4v7Rr9NNkJeHy_qhvWeFDFC9sRhnPPQ/s1600/DSCF2328.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXQ2k6D5vUChMckxuAvwTDSTZ42PQ4qWb6DnYoNRa6ecJvHypGWgqutg5wM_px2TVe54m3zhMxpUQ_MoqqkqtjfcXc4Wf6rlSWbRZdjiJ7RZNo4v7Rr9NNkJeHy_qhvWeFDFC9sRhnPPQ/s1600/DSCF2328.JPG" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Below is a collection I have gathered to make one of these Christmas decorations at our Guild work day tomorrow</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
. The green/gold silk fabric will be backed with Calico to take the weight of the buttons and beads. I have made ready a cord for hanging and a tassel -with 4 gold bells hanging in it. The buttons for this one are 3 Christmas reindeer to which I have added petite gold sequins ,,, gold sequin stars gold and red beads and a heavy thread to use in the design. I have also some pre-cut cardboard circles mine are 3 inch ones.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"> HERE'S HOW THEY ARE MADE</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho0T9Vr7mVoJ4SGqO5820let6pTjolHBU08w-vBP43KbF9KbeZCkOBF6mtgtJvaTXFXEAVr_FSoiQNx-pTly6bjnEoDapwOMYVcFeq12MbXLElfak2tj3cvU5Ia2j4TrR_-4LYzZV84aU/s1600/DSCF2339.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho0T9Vr7mVoJ4SGqO5820let6pTjolHBU08w-vBP43KbF9KbeZCkOBF6mtgtJvaTXFXEAVr_FSoiQNx-pTly6bjnEoDapwOMYVcFeq12MbXLElfak2tj3cvU5Ia2j4TrR_-4LYzZV84aU/s1600/DSCF2339.JPG" height="241" width="320" /></a>I start by cutting a paper template the size of my cardboard circle, pining this onto my fabric and tacking round it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This gives me the area in which to stitch my design, & because I am using a very thick Dacron wadding on my front cardboard circle I can stitch right out to the tacking stitches. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Using a heavy thread I doodle it with in the circle and then couch to hold it in place this gives me something to build my design on.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Placing the buttons on first, and stitch them firmly </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwFbeXHI39Ltvq27FqjrFpCl9Px-kjbvLkQgvIXzB1hp16Qlflpn85J5YOxIcnWFF_lCTA1fbsZAFBQylsMnn1Ziu5__qfteeLZsz4T43ZN7C2mF30_V5rNFtnKPmJqDXxPnDY3chI5ZA/s1600/DSCF2343.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwFbeXHI39Ltvq27FqjrFpCl9Px-kjbvLkQgvIXzB1hp16Qlflpn85J5YOxIcnWFF_lCTA1fbsZAFBQylsMnn1Ziu5__qfteeLZsz4T43ZN7C2mF30_V5rNFtnKPmJqDXxPnDY3chI5ZA/s1600/DSCF2343.JPG" height="320" width="312" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
into place, I like this type of button best as they sit flat and when stitched down will not move.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However some buttons come with a large shank on the back and I have found the best was of stitching them in place is to have the circle of Dacron wadding not glued to my cardboard circle but place behind fabric and when stitching the buttons on, to stitch them very tightly pulling them into the padding, fasten off after each button will also help keeping them firm</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I add the large beads first making clusters close to the buttons, then a variety of sequins and small beads to fill the rest of the spaces, and grouping them rather than spotting them everywhere. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2astxWoOXeoTqqvytJKo9efuVCKDxPAccXJnTOQJTgjiamze6BlFbziiTlQ91aozUfB-L_QU2rH-qvefVb_HTXmdNXEZVvUg7M9Yzy9py4R4n2khZyJc15u2QpK1h-Vxrm-RY19syuiA/s1600/DSCF2329.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2astxWoOXeoTqqvytJKo9efuVCKDxPAccXJnTOQJTgjiamze6BlFbziiTlQ91aozUfB-L_QU2rH-qvefVb_HTXmdNXEZVvUg7M9Yzy9py4R4n2khZyJc15u2QpK1h-Vxrm-RY19syuiA/s1600/DSCF2329.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a> When you are finished stitching your design cut it out BUT DO NOT CUT TOO CLOSE TO YOUR TACKING I leave at least an inch outside my tacking. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Run a gathering thread round your fabric draw it up over the padded cardboard circle and lace to hold firmly in place, if the padding is thick enough you will get a nice rounded effect. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cover a second cardboard circle with the same fabric but do not pad this making the back flat.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Before stitching the front and back pieces together add a cord or ribbon at the top for a hanger and your tassel at the bottom.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cover the seam where you have joined to two circles together by glueing a braid in place. and finish off by adding ribbon bows below the hanger and above the tassel.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGUovO_o7H2AVPuaPN9YTC66CpqafCH-BSV5hCmpQOHg6JUpL_xwBYqDrcyqmDy8VLNZi_EIg4ND7Jb1lBbrBtaoErU_615_S2P2N2ZXFuPb-dFE9_iNK_c00CQzdfcopL9go_bq8UC0U/s1600/DSCF2297.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGUovO_o7H2AVPuaPN9YTC66CpqafCH-BSV5hCmpQOHg6JUpL_xwBYqDrcyqmDy8VLNZi_EIg4ND7Jb1lBbrBtaoErU_615_S2P2N2ZXFuPb-dFE9_iNK_c00CQzdfcopL9go_bq8UC0U/s1600/DSCF2297.JPG" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have really enjoyed stitching the strawberries see my blog <a href="http://notesfromunderthemountain.blogspot.co.nz/">notes from under the mountain.</a> for all I have stitched to date. I stitch them on even weave fabric and find Joblin or 32 count linen. the best sometime I use a finer linen but it means a lot more stitching specially when it comes to sewing on the beads, however regardless what linen I use its the one size pattern for all . Right click on the pattern below to transfer to word and print, this is the correct finished size just allow some seam allowance. Note this is not a graph but just a pretty paper I used so that the pattern would show up on my blog.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Having cut round the pattern with seam allowance I draw it onto my fabric with a pencil, this pencil line will be just inside your cutting edge later. I also stitch right out into the seam allowance so that there are no gaps when I stitch it up.<br />

</o:p> Stage 1 of the Strawberry is stitched in Smyrna Cross stitch (double cross stitch) worked with one stand of floss over 4 fabric threads and a gap of 4 threads between each stitch in alternating rows. It is important to keep the stitch lying the same way dor all the rows.<br />
<br />
Stage 2 come back and fill the spaces between the Smyrna Cross stitches with a bead stitched on using a single metallic thread and a cross stitch over 4 threads. Again it is important to stitch your crosses the same way, this way the beads will all lie the same way.</div>

<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stage 3.Cut out the embroidered piece just outside the seam allowance on the side and across the curved top be a little more generous with the seam allowance in case it frays as you gather it up. </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fold in the side seam, tacking to hold in place while you stitch it up using ladder stitch, start stitching at the point of the strawberry and work towards the open top Keep your stitches small and close together so it will not gape when stuffed.</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stitch a running stitch across the top, stuff and gather up add a cord or ribbon loop before closing it up.<br />
<br />
Stage 4 At the top I stitch 5-6 woven picot stitches This finishes the strawberry with its nice topping of green and I have used a perle 8 thread for these. I found and excellent demonstration on how to do woven picots <a href="http://sarahwhittle.blogspot.co.nz/2011/02/woven-picots.html">here</a> on Susan Whittles blog you may prefer to make these from green felt.<br />

Happy Valentines Day, I like to think of this day as being not only for lovers but also a day when one can honour friendship,<br />
<br />
<div align="center">
<em><span style="font-size: large;">There is nothing on earth more prized than true friendship.</span></em></div>
<div align="center">
Thomas Aquinas</div>
<br />
Thank you all for your interest in my Valentine give away, I wish I could send something to you all but sadly there is only one winner. Caitlin was here yesterday to stitch and all names were put in a bowl for her to make the draw.... and the winner is....<br />
<br />
<div align="center">
<em><span style="font-size: large;">Gracie of Needles Pins and Dragonflies.</span></em></div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The little parcel of Red Rose small will be off in the post to her at the beginning of the week, I wont show here the extra pieces stitched so that these will be a surprise. One more surprise about the gift is that between now and next Valentines Day this set of smalls will be added to at least once.<br />
<br />

I used a fine linen and my fabric size was 3.5cm x 13.5cm. ( approx. 1 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) This allowed a .5cm seam allowance. (1/4 inch)</span></div>
<div style="clear: both; mso-pagination: none; text-align: left;">
The stitched area was 2.5 x 11.5 cm (1 x4 1/2 inches) shown in the drawing as a solid line. Stitch right round the edge of the design area with a small buttonhole stitch over 2 x 2 threads using a fine thread, Perle 12 is ideal. I used DMC Dentelles 80 but that is getting harder to find in NZ now. There is also a row of buttonhole stitches across 1.5cm down from the top.</div>
<div style="clear: both; mso-pagination: none; text-align: left;">
The dotted line further down shows a fold.</div>
<div style="clear: both; mso-pagination: none; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; mso-pagination: none; text-align: left;">
A small design is stitched in the centre space and the size for this will be governed by the thread count of your fabric.</div>

Fold in the seam allowance, fold across the top section and again at the dotted line. Place a piece of firm Vilene/pellon fabric behind the front section and sew up the sides by whipping together the buttonhole stitches. Slip the snap clip into the slit at the back, a couple of stitches to hold the top edge down and the clip will be held firmly in place.</div>

As well as ones with violets for myself to match my needlework accessory set I have found a tiny pink rose bud adapted from this chart also works well. Of course you could make the rose bud any colour you like, so with Valentine's Day coming shortly I have decided to stitch some with red rose buds for some friends and I will make one with a few matching items as a give to be drawn on Feb 14th leave a message on this posting if you would like to go in the draw,</div>

<br />
<strong></strong><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Retractable tape measures</strong> come in a variety of sizes, Round ones are the easiest to cover and the ones I can get at present are small, (4cm) although they come with a key ring and chain this is easily removed. This small size is ideal addition to a set of needlework accessories and specially tucking in a husif..</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br />
For many years the ones I decorated with a small embroidery either a every small cross stitch motif or bullion stitch roses were like the one I put in Rachel's hussif with a covered cardboard circle glues on the top<br />
.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9Nf7XkbnwT4_nx3UXmA9EFCt9SqlnalJa4xsEkEFyIE48UeX039dp0AJWkIn0WdMLbrL0dA8Rj27r-TEObeF0wyzLsyviA7zv0XT3WniVEI5pOXofQ0vCCdSvEAAO1MxyWibiXMKS6NE/s1600/DSCF1864.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9Nf7XkbnwT4_nx3UXmA9EFCt9SqlnalJa4xsEkEFyIE48UeX039dp0AJWkIn0WdMLbrL0dA8Rj27r-TEObeF0wyzLsyviA7zv0XT3WniVEI5pOXofQ0vCCdSvEAAO1MxyWibiXMKS6NE/s200/DSCF1864.JPG" width="141" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then I saw in a magazine how to cover the tape measure and the first one I did to try out the instructions just had a piece of fabric decorated with beads and a few stitches on top ( photo below) from there the idea grew . Although the idea is NOT my own I have adapted it to suit what I like.</div>
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6DLm9KS02AMquQH_Wz6fFIA_YucW1iaiDw4287y270-srlBQPoWfAwVq1V0q-lFccaSMDl6eGGt5UAK5CyXlY213KCVGcTY2fBn0azJaTdZpDbfd9ivmsH8oz5ZmD6GIKCv7AxXaq8BU/s1600/DSCF1861.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="264" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6DLm9KS02AMquQH_Wz6fFIA_YucW1iaiDw4287y270-srlBQPoWfAwVq1V0q-lFccaSMDl6eGGt5UAK5CyXlY213KCVGcTY2fBn0azJaTdZpDbfd9ivmsH8oz5ZmD6GIKCv7AxXaq8BU/s320/DSCF1861.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">T</span><span style="font-size: large;">hings to Note-</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The size of your Tape measure and what fabric you chose to stitch on will dictate the size of the design you can use. It is a good idea to cut a circle of card slightly smaller than the top of your tape measure and this will be your guide, also do not bring your design right out to the edge or it will be covered with the braid trim. My preferred linen is a fine 40 count which does allow me plenty of stitching space and the finer linen is not too bulky when turned in round the edges.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You will need a circle of good quality felt for the cover, avoid felt that is too thin as it will pull apart when you lace it across the top. The circle will need to be just big enough to cover bottom, sides and come just on to the top, make a template and check for size. The V niche is better to be a little small as size can be adjusted. Here is what is needed for the project</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw2zm-bwKtsrbfCBuw48pGpQ1GtSf8xB7JCzfT2wlx22FKxYftem4WpduOnyL2GPEl8N-8_YLx_MtXGAmaFb5jHyYNpCOInni6t6aI-nv0UyHGDjj0_85EJ7UJuScg8x0uqPfKp8_PEPQ/s1600/DSCF1879.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw2zm-bwKtsrbfCBuw48pGpQ1GtSf8xB7JCzfT2wlx22FKxYftem4WpduOnyL2GPEl8N-8_YLx_MtXGAmaFb5jHyYNpCOInni6t6aI-nv0UyHGDjj0_85EJ7UJuScg8x0uqPfKp8_PEPQ/s400/DSCF1879.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Stage 1</strong></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First attach a bead, charm or tassel to the end of the tape measure, use a strong thread, a quilting thread is ideal, It will be necessary to remove and replace what is on the end of the tape measure, a clothes peg is excellent for making sure you do not lose the tape inside the case while you are working. Stitch through the bead at least twice to make sure it is firmly attached then knot together the ends of your thread . use your needle to pull on one end of the thread taking the knot inside the bead before clipping the ends off.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh56i5V2wMU0SxqQKrWm07ENOmqHZpGaQTfNlajnaVVbAT3AKaQOv3amJxeYJHX4mOAmlEk7zcKvtenlc3DFab0zg-c3K6sWLHpdIp56jiQdbDioXkeIGdITNr5bF-7dzYRzPRw0DhpusA/s1600/2013-12+%2528Dec%25291.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh56i5V2wMU0SxqQKrWm07ENOmqHZpGaQTfNlajnaVVbAT3AKaQOv3amJxeYJHX4mOAmlEk7zcKvtenlc3DFab0zg-c3K6sWLHpdIp56jiQdbDioXkeIGdITNr5bF-7dzYRzPRw0DhpusA/s400/2013-12+%2528Dec%25291.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPDlDFozB4MWEP8XjeimF7q3LXW-iqEsmfVHgRh2EBwT8CMKy9yQbjDNDvMvHv15rlKC6I6lPZe-Asb1LO0GdmLcpZ4Z0037uPxbeUZOY4TmY-4Lco4nE8WPNZblprdYJ_HZfmJNKrY6k/s1600/DSCF1868.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPDlDFozB4MWEP8XjeimF7q3LXW-iqEsmfVHgRh2EBwT8CMKy9yQbjDNDvMvHv15rlKC6I6lPZe-Asb1LO0GdmLcpZ4Z0037uPxbeUZOY4TmY-4Lco4nE8WPNZblprdYJ_HZfmJNKrY6k/s400/DSCF1868.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong></strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Stage 2</strong></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now to cover the tape measure using the strong thread or a double thread, stitch a running stitch around the edge of your felt and draw up over the tape measure <u>Make sure the button for retracting the tape is on the bottom, </u>then lace it to draw in the fabric and hold it firmly in place. Gather and lace your embroidery round the small piece of cardboard and attach it to the top of the tape measure with a slip stitch.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHIEILjunQ4RZsW8Q42pV7NHtoCRyvh5K2_M6TMzhI2kmE1GD1s8w9-QAvl-DFpduZbmEieZ4ib_jiHFhW-JZTZ_PcOZvcwhcmIP0bLKhJHRCkIx1JRgUqgoovNV50at-ygJ1xT6dTp0k/s1600/2013-12+(Dec).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHIEILjunQ4RZsW8Q42pV7NHtoCRyvh5K2_M6TMzhI2kmE1GD1s8w9-QAvl-DFpduZbmEieZ4ib_jiHFhW-JZTZ_PcOZvcwhcmIP0bLKhJHRCkIx1JRgUqgoovNV50at-ygJ1xT6dTp0k/s400/2013-12+(Dec).jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finish by gluing a pretty braid round the edge to hide your stitched. Note the embroidery on the top of my tape measure is a little larger than I would prefer but was stitched for a different size tape measure which I can no longer buy and I hate to waste it !! so I have used a very thin braid to finish<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFgzJxhmUj8SWp-bEYHj0bh1SOvWHlgb4ccqcry68usDJEr3LQQtOHGU0sKJq1IqsRDFzQjr2YaKRIMQqAhT9e3EVt9yvlX0ABvzcuTs3yzFajfzHddQ1ykKPf0SgwwN8iAmrJWbtLMYY/s1600/DSCF1890.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="372" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFgzJxhmUj8SWp-bEYHj0bh1SOvWHlgb4ccqcry68usDJEr3LQQtOHGU0sKJq1IqsRDFzQjr2YaKRIMQqAhT9e3EVt9yvlX0ABvzcuTs3yzFajfzHddQ1ykKPf0SgwwN8iAmrJWbtLMYY/s400/DSCF1890.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>

When Paul was first told that the blood condition he had lived with for so many years had reversed and he then had leukaemia, we decided to make the most of the time we had and yes in many ways that last year had some very special monuments, and with together time being number 1 importance this blog was left to sit. I have come through the first year of flying solo and adjusted to changes of life style, completed 5 years with the stitching friends group ( and plan to go on) and I guess I was looking for a new challenge, when a request to my main <a href="http://notesfromunderthemountain.blogspot.co.nz/">blog</a> Notes from under the Mountain for a tutorial on how to do the covered tape measurers came from. The bird embroidery was stitched about 10 years ago . I have made a new signature for this blog and have use a tomtit on it but as yet have to find a way to reduce it further.</div>
